Your active Pokémon must have the Festival Lead ability, a new ability seen on a few Pokémon in Twilight Masquerade. It has the aforementioned Festival Lead ability, which is sneakily powerful. Besides enabling Thwackey’s Boom Boom Groove ability, it can enable Dipplin to attack twice a turn, an insanely powerful buff in the Pokémon TCG. This ability also has a condition however, which is the Festival Grounds stadium being in play. Unfortunately, this card is quite weak, but its synergy with these Grass-type festival Pokémon might make it worth running. With a full bench, Dipplin can do 120 damage twice a turn with its Do the Wave attack. This can easily create two-prize turns with some damage buffs or gust effects, which Thwackey can conveniently find with its ability. Its Pyro Dance Ability accelerates two Energy from hand per turn, albeit of different Basic types. While this is no Super Cold, it can work in concert with Charizard to spring strong attacks out of nowhere. These decks have plenty of options for blasting the active Pokémon, which pairs well with gust effects like Boss’s Orders, but what if you can’t gust around your opponent’s board every turn? Hitting them right on the Bench could be the move. Cramorant’s Spit Shot attack does a huge chunk of damage to any target. Because of the singleton rule, Gym Leader Challenge players will have to consider cutting this Zapdos to run a different one. Twilight Masquerade Zapdos is the first one in a while that actually makes a strong case for itself. One of the biggest weaknesses of Lightning-type Pokémon is their general inability to deal a huge amount of damage at once, often relying on chipping away with spread damage like Tapu Koko’s Flying Flip attack to set up knockouts. But TWM Zapdos offers a more direct alternative, blasting whatever is sitting in the opponent’s Active Spot without asking questions. And the Energy cost can be satisfied with support from Dynamotor Pokémon like Flaaffy and Eelektrik, who can also make use of these Energy that’ve just been discarded. It gives this Pokémon an Infiltrator-like immunity to damage on a coin flip, as long as this Pokémon has any Darkness Energy attached. Note that this Darkness Energy can be fulfilled by Special Energy that provide multiple types of Energy, so the right Blend Energy would activate Adrena-Pheromones as well as power up any of your attacks. So long as Okidogi has one of these attached, it’ll be a 230 HP Pokémon that will One-Hit KO most Pokémon for only two Energy and no downside. Its Proud Fangs attack is free, a great benefit to a type that often struggles with Energy acceleration. And to do 120 damage, you only need to have used one of the many “Earthquake”-style attacks that Fighting already tends to run for their efficient cost. Steel Burst has a great rate at 50 damage per Metal Energy attached, which can ramp up with cards like Bronzong and Metal Saucer. And notably, non-Metal energy are not discarded with this attack, so you can attach other types of Basic Energy, or perhaps Special Energy with utility such as Capture Energy in cases where you don’t need to do maximum damage. A new Dragon-type Pokémon? Applin doesn’t look like the most fearsome dragon out there, and its card reflects that. But what’s important is the fact that this Applin is the first ever Dragon-type Applin, meaning that trainers can evolve it into Flapple from Evolving Skies, an attacker so strong it’s almost unfair. Many of the best Pokémon in GLC, whether supporting or attacking, have Abilities, each of which powers up Acidic Mucus. And the single Colorless Energy attack cost is super important for a deck that often needs to attach 2-3 different types of Energy to each attacker. Recon Directive is a cooler-named version of Pidgeotto’s Air Mail, a staple in many Colorless decks. Seeing two additional cards per turn at the cost of setting up a Stage 1 is a trade any Dragon trainer would gladly make. Attract Customers is reminiscent of Mysterious Tail or Stellar Wish, offering Tatsugiri as a consistency booster as well as a pivot. The Supporter search is also redundant with Dragonite, so trainers may replace that Stage 2 line entirely or double up to find these key supporters at any point in the game. One of the best ways to stop them is very simple: use attackers that are too big for the opponent to knock out in one hit. Brambleghast takes this to the extreme with its Resilient Soul Ability. At the end of the game, this Pokémon can reach 350 HP, well beyond the range of the average attacker. Its Powerful Needles attack might be somewhat unreliable, but Energy-accelerating Grass-type Pokémon like Rillaboom and Cherrim can let you flip enough coins to roll through any threat your opponent presents. You can create a powerful endgame scenario by leaving Brambleghast as your only Pokemon, forcing your opponent to knock it out — just watch out for effects that can turn off its Ability! https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63477d5b22ce645aee564230/564e1b59-8aa9-4b57-b535-baaa6e866fbb/tef.037.centiskorch.png Blog - Temporal Forces Set Review - Centiskorch One of Fire’s biggest struggles is finding efficient attacks that deal a lot of damage for a manageable Energy cost. Even with good Trainer-based acceleration, it feels that Fire needs better cheap attackers. Temporal Forces Centiskorch makes the case for itself here with its Charring Breath attack, boasting a very impressive 180 damage for just two Fire Energy. It has a strange downside, however: this attack requires the defending Pokémon to already be Burned for any damage to be dealt. Because it’s quite easy for most decks to switch, retreat, or evolve to cure this status condition on their turn, it’ll be important to find ways to Burn the Defending Pokémon before you attack. This Ability will Burn any Pokémon brought up to the Active Spot via switching or retreating, teeing them up to be eviscerated by Centiskorch, or even just worn down by Burn damage. Feraligatr has always seemed to be one of these cursed Pokémon, but Temporal Forces may be the set that breaks the curse for the Big Jaw Pokémon. Feraligatr has the Torrential Heart Ability, which basically powers it up into Super Saiyan mode for a turn, giving it the damage output to KO even the bulkiest Pokémon at the cost of its own HP. This is an appealing price to pay, as your opponent will likely spend a turn knocking Feraligatr out no matter how much HP it has left. And its Giant Wave attack not only reaches 280 damage after activating Torrential Heart, but it also has a respectable baseline of 160 damage when you don’t want to damage yourself. Time will tell if this Feraligatr can go claw-to-fin with the best Water attackers, but at the very least fans of this Pokémon can feel good about finally having a powerful card to play. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63477d5b22ce645aee564230/c08b144b-30a1-474d-808e-b91cec0b30ea/tef.052.raichu.png Blog - Temporal Forces Set Review - Raichu Gym Leader Challenge is a format with so much room for creative strategies, and Lightning Spread is a fan favorite. Attackers like Tapu Koko and Electivire can damage each of your opponent’s Pokémon at once, resulting in huge prize swings. Raichu from Temporal Forces is another great addition to this suite of spread attackers with its Collateral Bolts attack. This 2-Energy attack is very efficient for its massive damage ceiling of 300 total damage. The challenge will be sequencing Raichu correctly, as it can’t really be used as the first attacker in a game, and it will struggle to deal with Pokémon that’ve been Benched in the last turn or two. But adding one more Pokémon to this archetype’s roster is never a bad thing, and Raichu may end up taking some very flashy knockouts in the hands of a skilled trainer. If this is your favorite aspect of GLC, then Reuniclus can power your deck up even further. Its Summoning Gate attack can super-charge your bench, putting any Pokémon into play. This includes Pokémon of any evolution stage, and even Pokémon without Psychic-type pre-evolved forms, like Espeon or Orbeetle. You can also bring out generically good Pokémon that your deck may already be playing, like Dragapult or Gallade. To maximize your odds of hitting, you can combine this with cards like Mallow or Ciphermaniac’s Codebreaking to guarantee certain Pokémon are found. This Ancient Pokémon is worth your consideration for its Wrathful Charge attack, a simple but powerful attack. It slots perfectly into Fighting decks that use plenty of “Earthquake” attackers that damage your own Pokémon. Once you’ve satisfied this condition, you can hit 160 damage on a Basic Pokémon which is a great rate. Metang might normally just be there to evolve into a Metagross, but now it might steal the show as the most important Beldum evolution. Metang has the powerful Metal Maker Ability, a sweet way to charge up Metal Energy to any of your Pokémon. While this ability relies on random chance to hit, it’s got a few sneaky upsides that you might not notice on first read. Metal Maker accelerates any number of Energy found, meaning that you can high roll or even stack your deck with cards with Supporter cards like Mallow or Ciphermaniac’s Codebreaking. And it places all the cards you didn’t attach straight onto the bottom of your deck. This is a sweet optimization that skilled players can take advantage of: seeing which cards are now on the bottom of your deck can inform what you might draw from the top of your deck with other effects. Small edges like this are the cherry on top for Metang. Once your board is sufficiently powered up, you can always “cash in” Metang and evolve it into one of any number of Metagross cards, which each in turn get better when they evolve from such a useful Stage 1 Pokémon. Koraidon’s first attack probably isn’t going to be too effective, capping out at 30 damage thanks to the lack of other single-prize Ancient Dragons. But Shred is a respectable attack, doing decent damage and smashing through pesky defensive effects for three energy. Still, poking something for some decent damage (and maybe KOing a Basic Pokémon with a damage modifier like Muscle Band) can be a decent play to start the game, and the next turn you’ll have the powerful Sparking Strike attack at your disposal. What’s interesting about Miraidon is that it attacks for energy which isn’t commonly played in Dragon-type GLC decks. Here, the card designers tease us with a new Basic Fire-type Pokémon which may be better than any existing options but probably won’t propel the type to new heights. Chi-Yu boasts decent stats with 110 HP and a Retreat Cost of 1, great for an early-game Pokémon that wants to set up some energy with its first attack then get out of there. If your opponent isn’t careful, they’ll be on the receiving end of Chi-Yu’s Megafire of Envy attack later in the game, which does a massive amount of damage for just 2 energy. Veluza is a big Basic Pokémon that would be a great target for Water energy acceleration by the likes of Blastoise or Baxcalibur in the early game. But if you’re brave enough, Elekid may reward you by sneaking some prizes out of nowhere. 30 damage for 0 energy is an amazing rate for an attack, great for setting up a KO or picking your opponent’s weakened Pokémon off the bench. And to top it off, Elekid has no Retreat Cost, meaning that it can run away to the bench next turn should it manage to survive. Xatu is just one of several acceleration options that Psychic decks now have access to (see also: Malamar and Gardevoir), and one of several consistency Pokémon (see also: Gallade and Tinkaton). This Ability can be a huge tempo swing, giving you a big hit into the opponent and demanding they knock out one of your benched Pokémon next turn if they want to return the favor. Espathra’s attack isn’t too bad either, taking KOs with ease if you’ve discarded Tulip. Manually attaching this energy might be a slow strategy, so you’ll want to consider other ways of accelerating it, like Groudon’s first attack Swelling Power or accelerators like Coalossal, Lucario, or the new Garganacl from this set. One of the biggest challenges this deck faces is finding consistent ways to poison the defending Pokémon throughout the whole game. Brute Bonnet might be the most reliable way to do this every turn. Its ability, when turned on with the new Ancient Booster Energy Capsule Tool, can be used every single turn on this Basic Pokémon. And as a small upside, the tool makes Brute Bonnet immune to status conditions itself. There was no real way to stop Sableye from doing significant damage to your board other than limiting your opponent’s setup… until now! Jirachi’s Stellar Veil ability is a nice, simple option for Metal players to entirely sidestep the little gem goblin by preventing its counters from ending up on your bench. Survival Strategy isn’t the greatest setup attack as you’re left vulnerable to hand disruption supporters like N and Iono, but the double energy cost makes this card even less desirable as you’d have to waste a valuable double energy on the Mimicry Pokémon to use this attack with any efficiency. What??? That’s right, a Pokémon with Luxurious Cape attached gives up two prizes, but it has +100 HP as a benefit. Most of the time, this will result in the equipped Pokémon taking an extra hit to knock out, so at minimum you’re keeping up with the prize trade without having to find and charge energy to another attacker. But you can tailor your deck to make use of this card and push the advantage in your games. Maybe you’ll use it in a healing deck to tank hit after hit on a big Pokémon like Machamp? Or you can use the Cape with Penny and Regigias to soak hits with a VSTAR-sized wall. Just be careful of your opponent removing or deactivating this tool with Field Blower or Tool Jammer; it would feel really bad for your opponent to take two knockouts in just one turn! They’re Tool cards which give your Pokémon access to an attack with a Colorless cost, but only on the turn you attach the TM (as it will discard itself at the end of your turn). So unlike most Tool cards, they can’t be removed by your opponent’s Item cards, although be aware of effects that might nullify your tools as a static ability (like Tool Jammer)! Blindside is the only one of these new TMs that is used for direct offensive pressure — it provides a sniping option on an opposing Pokémon that’s already damaged. You can imagine this fits in well in decks that can spread damage counters through attacks or even abilities, as you’ll have targets ready to be Blindsided. But what’s really interesting about Blindside is how it synergizes with the specific Pokémon using the attack. Consider Articuno, who has the Delta Plus Ancient Trait. This is a powerful effect on Articuno that can’t be turned off by any means and gives you one more prize when it takes a knockout. Tri-Edge is a fairly weak attack, but what if you could give Articuno a strong attack? At first glance, Devolution doesn’t seem that powerful — your opponent can just re-evolve all their Pokémon next turn and you’ve done nothing, right? Without any special consideration, this is all that Devolution does, so you’ll need to set up certain scenarios to leverage it effectively. One way to use Devolution may be seen in Standard format: slowing down Rare Candy usage. If a Stage 2 Pokémon evolved with Rare Candy is devolved, the resulting Basic Pokémon can’t re-evolve without another Rare Candy, except you definitely won’t have another Rare Candy in a singleton format like GLC. So an opponent who gets greedy with their evolutions can be put back in their place with this TM. Maybe the sneakier but more effective way to leverage Devolution is taking advantage of that small window where a Pokémon goes back to a pre-evolved stage. For instance, what if you could lock all of your opponent’s Pokémon from evolving with Archeops? Or spread enough damage that the devolved Pokémon will be automatically Knocked Out with their lower HP? This is a fast, powerful, versatile card that every GLC deck will need to at least consider running. One can imagine going second with this card, attaching an energy to their active Pokémon and starting to set their board up immediately. Not only does Evolution search Pokémon from your deck, but these Pokémon are evolving on the turn you use Evolution, meaning that Stage 1’s can evolve into Stage 2’s on the second turn of the game, which is bordering on ridiculous. For any deck that plays important and/or many evolutions (think Grass, Dragon, or Psychic for example), this TM is a must-consider for GLC trainers. Do note, however, that Evolution is not a freebie to use. Many decks like Lightning or Darkness would rather use their first attack to deal damage with speedy attackers like Zapdos or Hoopa. And the evolution clause requires you to have the evolving Pokémon on your bench (so it can’t be in your prizes or your deck), AND the evolution Pokémon has to be in your deck (meaning it can’t be in your prizes or your hand). Notably, it provides decent energy acceleration to any deck, including types like Dragon or Fighting that might lack convenient acceleration. Nevertheless, this is a solid tanky card for decks that fall behind early and soak a lot of damage while developing a winning strategy. Unfortunately, this card is nothing but discard fodder once the game starts, so it’s probably not great in aggressive decks or decks with a lot of Basic Pokémon. Forest Miasma effectively Poisons the defending Pokémon, even those that switch in or are already Poisoned, making it a great option to whittle away at the opponent more quickly. And Lock Up can pick off evolving threats that you might want to bring up from your opponent’s bench, or keep a big threat pinned to the active while you attack your opponent’s resources in other ways. Entei might be able to fill that role in the early game. Its Pressure Ability makes it much bulkier than its 130 HP would suggest, especially with a tool like Bravery Charm attached. And while you won’t be using Blaze Ball the first turn of the game, some support from a Double Colorless Energy will allow Entei to attack on the second turn going forward, applying some pressure while forming an obstacle your opponents will have to destroy to get to your other Pokémon. Cards like Switching Cups or Magcargo can put an Energy card on top of your own deck, and even the opponent’s deck can be controlled with Team Star Grunt. Because Palafin has to switch in during the turn, and not between turns when a Pokémon is knocked out, you’re going to need some switching and retreating options to get Palafin where it needs to be. It works in quite the same way — Claydol, while pondering its Cube, won’t deal any damage to itself, allowing it to Kaboom Doll over and over. While this Claydol can’t take any knockouts by itself, unlike its Fighting-type brother, its attack only costs one energy, which is very valuable for springing your opponent with this combo out of nowhere. And with a tool attached, Stunfisk can deal some decent damage to attacking Pokémon too. Its Swelling Flash Ability means that, besides evolving your Pokémon into Luxray normally, you can also put it straight onto your bench if you’re behind on prizes, which is an incredible effect that can cause huge swings out of nowhere. And its attack will charge through all but the strongest attackers if you can power it up, making for some great comeback potential. Healing 20 damage after every turn (that’s your turn and your opponent’s turn) may not seem like a lot, but can snowball out of control and leave your entire team standing while you tear through your opponent’s Pokémon. There are plenty of applications for this Ability — think about pairing it with damage reduction effects like Rock Chestplate or Lake Acuity. Or maybe you’ll use it to heal off the damage caused by your Earthquake Pokémon like Whiscash and Donphan. It punishes attacking Pokémon who deal big damage — even if the opponent knocks out your Mabosstiff, they’ll be punished if their attacker can’t survive the hit as well. But look closer and you’ll notice its Nutritional Iron Ability which boosts Orthworm to 230 HP if it has enough Metal energy on it. 230 HP is more than some Pokémon ex have, so this worm already looks like it’ll be pulling its weight. And adding on a tool like Bravery Charm to further increase its HP seems like a no-brainer. But where Orthworm gets really dangerous is when you can heal it with cards like Mallow & Lana, or reset its damage counters by picking it up with cards like Penny. There must be no better feeling in the world than watching your opponent attack your worm for two to three turns then wiping all their progress away with one card. After not seeing any in Scarlet & Violet base set, Dragon tamers might be worried that the TCG would unofficially send Dragons into retirement for a few years like they did for most of the Sword & Shield block. It can increase your consistency by finding your draw Supporters to keep churning through your deck, or assembling combos with cards like Guzma & Hala. Pelipper is also a great target for Scoop Up Net, allowing you to use Hearsay multiple times in a game for multiple purposes. But Paldea Evolved Slaking is here to remind GLC players why this Pokémon should be respected and feared! Slacker’s Headstrike, as far as attacks go, is simply busted. 240 damage for three energy is an insanely good rate that will crush most Pokémon that dare face Slaking down. The rest of the text on this card attempts to nerf this powerful Stage 2 Pokémon, leaving Slaking sleeping and useless by your next turn more often than not. But Colorless is well-equipped to work around Slaking’s weaknesses and keep swinging turn after turn. Use the new Therapeutic Energy to keep Slaking from sleeping on the job, or the new Jet Energy to reset Slaking’s status when it goes to the bench. These are two great Colorless energy with nice effects that won’t break the game on their own but can be leveraged by smart trainers to enable powerful plays. Therapeutic Energy can stop rogue Status Condition strategies from slowing you down in addition to keeping your Pokémon that self-inflict status conditions from tripping over themselves. And Jet Energy is a great pivot option; attach it to a benched Pokémon once you’ve fully charged it up for a big attack, or attach it to a Pokémon with 1 retreat cost then retreat it to put whatever Pokémon you want in the Active Spot. Maybe a Hex Maniac to slow them down while you gain the lead? For just a single energy, this sandy fella brings all of your opponent’s Pokémon 30 damage closer to being knocked out. And with 140 HP, it’s not unlikely Palossand will be able to attack two or three times itself. While 30 damage is not much at all in terms of taking a knockout, the ability to target any Pokémon with this damage is really important. Archeops is probably the most powerful of them all, accelerating multiple Special Energy from the deck at once; Porygon-Z UNB users already know that Colorless has no shortage of incredible Special Energy like Triple Acceleration Energy and Powerful Colorless Energy to utilize. The downside to this Archeops is that its first evolution is Unidentified Fossil: an Item card which is much less searchable than a Basic Pokémon. It’ll be really exciting to see how the metagame adapts to the introduction of Archeops: will it replace Porygon-Z, or maybe be played in the same Colorless decks? Will Colorless trainers try playing Pokémon Research Lab to get Archen out of the deck, a technique previously only known to Fighting-type Gym Leaders? This is an especially handy effect for a type like Dragon, which has a variety of attackers that may all be useful in different situations.
