<image:title>Blog - Twilight Masquerade Set Review - Thwackey</image:title>
<image:caption>Most Grass-type Gym Leader Challenge decks already run Rillaboom for its insane Energy acceleration. So upgrading the Stage 1 form feels like a no brainer for most decks. This Thwackey has the Boom Boom Groove ability, which gives you a free Computer Search effect every turn… if you can satisfy its requirement. Your active Pokémon must have the Festival Lead ability, a new ability seen on a few Pokémon in Twilight Masquerade. Only one of them is a Grass-type, but luckily it packs quite a punch.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63477d5b22ce645aee564230/8d16d108-354e-44ae-9216-09f80f3d6be2/sv6_en_170_std.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Twilight Masquerade Set Review - Dipplin</image:title>
<image:caption>Dipplin is a new Applin evolution who makes its debut in Twilight Masquerade. It has the aforementioned Festival Lead ability, which is sneakily powerful. Besides enabling Thwackey’s Boom Boom Groove ability, it can enable Dipplin to attack twice a turn, an insanely powerful buff in the Pokémon TCG. This ability also has a condition however, which is the Festival Grounds stadium being in play. Unfortunately, this card is quite weak, but its synergy with these Grass-type festival Pokémon might make it worth running. With a full bench, Dipplin can do 120 damage twice a turn with its Do the Wave attack. This can easily create two-prize turns with some damage buffs or gust effects, which Thwackey can conveniently find with its ability. Playing these party animals seems like a big puzzle to unravel, but skilled trainers will surely be able to leverage these new cards well.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63477d5b22ce645aee564230/471a3210-aecc-4d81-88a6-16dd55781fe4/sv6_en_173_std.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Twilight Masquerade Set Review - Infernape</image:title>
<image:caption>Something that Fire-type decks in Gym Leader Challenge lack is decent Energy acceleration. There are Supporters like Welder and Mela that can accelerate Energy once or maybe twice a game, but many decks might prefer on-board, repeatable acceleration. Enter Infernape. Its Pyro Dance Ability accelerates two Energy from hand per turn, albeit of different Basic types. While this is no Super Cold, it can work in concert with Charizard to spring strong attacks out of nowhere. This acceleration might be what Fire decks need to start running some more powerful but Energy-hungry attackers.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63477d5b22ce645aee564230/37527fc8-10d5-49c2-9136-dcfb93174948/sv6_en_176_std.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Twilight Masquerade Set Review - Cramorant</image:title>
<image:caption>A staple of the Gym Leader Challenge since the start is the “Hydro Pump” Water deck, which uses Energy acceleration to launch powerful attacks from Pokémon with an infinite damage ceiling. These decks have plenty of options for blasting the active Pokémon, which pairs well with gust effects like Boss’s Orders, but what if you can’t gust around your opponent’s board every turn? Hitting them right on the Bench could be the move. Cramorant’s Spit Shot attack does a huge chunk of damage to any target. While discarding all your Energy might be a hefty cost for some decks to pay, Hydro Pump decks are great at accelerating and recycling this Energy to keep up the pressure.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63477d5b22ce645aee564230/e4c84b18-31e8-4d50-974e-358a7e2ba83b/sv6_en_065_std.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Twilight Masquerade Set Review - Zapdos</image:title>
<image:caption>In Lightning-type Gym Leader Challenge decks, Team Up Zapdos has been a long-time staple, applying early pressure for these decks that are often fast-paced and lean on Energy requirements. Because of the singleton rule, Gym Leader Challenge players will have to consider cutting this Zapdos to run a different one. Twilight Masquerade Zapdos is the first one in a while that actually makes a strong case for itself. One of the biggest weaknesses of Lightning-type Pokémon is their general inability to deal a huge amount of damage at once, often relying on chipping away with spread damage like Tapu Koko’s Flying Flip attack to set up knockouts. But TWM Zapdos offers a more direct alternative, blasting whatever is sitting in the opponent’s Active Spot without asking questions. And the Energy cost can be satisfied with support from Dynamotor Pokémon like Flaaffy and Eelektrik, who can also make use of these Energy that’ve just been discarded. Really, the only reason not to run this Zapdos is the cost of having to cut the original Zapdos from Team Up.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Twilight Masquerade Set Review - Fezandipiti</image:title>
<image:caption>Part of the “Loyal Three” from the Scarlet & Violet Teal Mask DLC, Fezandipiti has the defensive Adrena-Pheremones ability. It gives this Pokémon an Infiltrator-like immunity to damage on a coin flip, as long as this Pokémon has any Darkness Energy attached. Note that this Darkness Energy can be fulfilled by Special Energy that provide multiple types of Energy, so the right Blend Energy would activate Adrena-Pheromones as well as power up any of your attacks. This Pokémon seems perfect for sitting in the active and dishing out some solid damage while you take time to set up your board behind a good coin flip or two.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63477d5b22ce645aee564230/60d62257-e688-4840-8fcd-9608b229d2dc/sv6_en_111_std.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Twilight Masquerade Set Review - Okidogi</image:title>
<image:caption>Another member of the Loyal Three, Okidogi takes a more direct, offensive approach than Fezandipiti. Adrena-Power gives this Basic Pokémon a huge stats boost, with the same condition that can be satisfied by multi-type Special Energy. So long as Okidogi has one of these attached, it’ll be a 230 HP Pokémon that will One-Hit KO most Pokémon for only two Energy and no downside. So long as you can find your Special Energy with cards like Guzma & Hala and your opponent hasn’t turned off Adrena-Power, Okidogi will be a must-answer threat that gives Fighting-type decks some much-needed pressure.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63477d5b22ce645aee564230/401317a6-5eae-4cb6-ac2c-fb0e77e0a2f3/sv6_en_100_std.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Twilight Masquerade Set Review - Hisuian Arcanine</image:title>
<image:caption>While Okidogi presents itself as a Fighting-type option based on raw damage, Hisuian Arcanine gets by on synergy with common Fighting attackers instead. Its Proud Fangs attack is free, a great benefit to a type that often struggles with Energy acceleration. And to do 120 damage, you only need to have used one of the many “Earthquake”-style attacks that Fighting already tends to run for their efficient cost. Hisuian Arcanine can be a great option for attacking in the midgame when you’re busy setting up your finishers on the bench.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63477d5b22ce645aee564230/a132a204-0680-4194-9cb6-eb4176f70d7a/sv6_en_123_std.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Twilight Masquerade Set Review - Heatran</image:title>
<image:caption>Heatran is a great “Energy sink” for Metal-type decks that need a way to dish out huge damage. Steel Burst has a great rate at 50 damage per Metal Energy attached, which can ramp up with cards like Bronzong and Metal Saucer. And notably, non-Metal energy are not discarded with this attack, so you can attach other types of Basic Energy, or perhaps Special Energy with utility such as Capture Energy in cases where you don’t need to do maximum damage. And Heatran’s Incandescent Body Ability is a nice cherry on top, adding a slight effective damage boost for any Pokémon brave enough to attack Heatran.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63477d5b22ce645aee564230/043ae081-c12d-4458-bc31-c765e9be4258/sv6_en_185_std.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Twilight Masquerade Set Review - Applin</image:title>
<image:caption>What’s this? A new Dragon-type Pokémon? Applin doesn’t look like the most fearsome dragon out there, and its card reflects that. But what’s important is the fact that this Applin is the first ever Dragon-type Applin, meaning that trainers can evolve it into Flapple from Evolving Skies, an attacker so strong it’s almost unfair. Many of the best Pokémon in GLC, whether supporting or attacking, have Abilities, each of which powers up Acidic Mucus. And the single Colorless Energy attack cost is super important for a deck that often needs to attach 2-3 different types of Energy to each attacker. So while your Applin may not do much more than sit on the bench and evolve, it’s what Applin evolves into that your opponents will need to look out for.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Twilight Masquerade Set Review - Drakloak</image:title>
<image:caption>What’s this? A second new Dragon-type Pokémon? If there’s something Dragon decks could desperately need, it’s draw support Pokémon. Drakloak is the long-awaited answer to these prayers. Recon Directive is a cooler-named version of Pidgeotto’s Air Mail, a staple in many Colorless decks. Seeing two additional cards per turn at the cost of setting up a Stage 1 is a trade any Dragon trainer would gladly make. Although there are no single-prize Dragon Dragapult for Drakloak to evolve into (yet…), Drakloak doesn’t need to evolve to make the roster in almost any Dragon-type GLC deck.</image:caption>

<image:caption>What’s this? A third new Dragon-type Pokémon? When it rains, it might as well pour. Tatsugiri is yet another support option for Dragon decks. Attract Customers is reminiscent of Mysterious Tail or Stellar Wish, offering Tatsugiri as a consistency booster as well as a pivot. The Supporter search is also redundant with Dragonite, so trainers may replace that Stage 2 line entirely or double up to find these key supporters at any point in the game. Increasing the Basic count in the deck will also feel good to make use of cards like Buddy-Buddy Poffin or Nest Ball all throughout the game.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Temporal Forces Set Review - Brambleghast</image:title>
<image:caption>Since the inception of Gym Leader Challenge, the most popular strategy has been to chain one-hit knockouts on the opponent’s Pokémon every turn while trying to stop them from doing the same. One of the best ways to stop them is very simple: use attackers that are too big for the opponent to knock out in one hit. Brambleghast takes this to the extreme with its Resilient Soul Ability. At the end of the game, this Pokémon can reach 350 HP, well beyond the range of the average attacker. Its Powerful Needles attack might be somewhat unreliable, but Energy-accelerating Grass-type Pokémon like Rillaboom and Cherrim can let you flip enough coins to roll through any threat your opponent presents. You can create a powerful endgame scenario by leaving Brambleghast as your only Pokemon, forcing your opponent to knock it out — just watch out for effects that can turn off its Ability!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Temporal Forces Set Review - Centiskorch</image:title>
<image:caption>One of Fire’s biggest struggles is finding efficient attacks that deal a lot of damage for a manageable Energy cost. Even with good Trainer-based acceleration, it feels that Fire needs better cheap attackers. Temporal Forces Centiskorch makes the case for itself here with its Charring Breath attack, boasting a very impressive 180 damage for just two Fire Energy. It has a strange downside, however: this attack requires the defending Pokémon to already be Burned for any damage to be dealt. Because it’s quite easy for most decks to switch, retreat, or evolve to cure this status condition on their turn, it’ll be important to find ways to Burn the Defending Pokémon before you attack. That’s where Magcargo enters the picture.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Temporal Forces Set Review - Magcargo</image:title>
<image:caption>While it doesn’t have an impressive attack, Magcargo does have a useful Ability in Lava Zone. This Ability will Burn any Pokémon brought up to the Active Spot via switching or retreating, teeing them up to be eviscerated by Centiskorch, or even just worn down by Burn damage. While it’s not the easiest combination to pull off, it’ll surely be satisfying.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Temporal Forces Set Review - Feraligatr</image:title>
<image:caption>Many Pokémon seem to be perpetually cursed, receiving mediocre card after mediocre card for GLC purposes. Feraligatr has always seemed to be one of these cursed Pokémon, but Temporal Forces may be the set that breaks the curse for the Big Jaw Pokémon. Feraligatr has the Torrential Heart Ability, which basically powers it up into Super Saiyan mode for a turn, giving it the damage output to KO even the bulkiest Pokémon at the cost of its own HP. This is an appealing price to pay, as your opponent will likely spend a turn knocking Feraligatr out no matter how much HP it has left. And its Giant Wave attack not only reaches 280 damage after activating Torrential Heart, but it also has a respectable baseline of 160 damage when you don’t want to damage yourself. Time will tell if this Feraligatr can go claw-to-fin with the best Water attackers, but at the very least fans of this Pokémon can feel good about finally having a powerful card to play.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Temporal Forces Set Review - Raichu</image:title>
<image:caption>Gym Leader Challenge is a format with so much room for creative strategies, and Lightning Spread is a fan favorite. Attackers like Tapu Koko and Electivire can damage each of your opponent’s Pokémon at once, resulting in huge prize swings. Raichu from Temporal Forces is another great addition to this suite of spread attackers with its Collateral Bolts attack. This 2-Energy attack is very efficient for its massive damage ceiling of 300 total damage. The challenge will be sequencing Raichu correctly, as it can’t really be used as the first attacker in a game, and it will struggle to deal with Pokémon that’ve been Benched in the last turn or two. But adding one more Pokémon to this archetype’s roster is never a bad thing, and Raichu may end up taking some very flashy knockouts in the hands of a skilled trainer. Just make sure you aren’t knocking out your own Pokémon!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Temporal Forces Set Review - Reuniclus</image:title>
<image:caption>Part of the appeal of Gym Leader Challenge is the wide array of Evolution Pokémon you can play at one time, using multiple unique Stage 2 Pokémon on the same board in a way that just wouldn’t be realistic in other formats. If this is your favorite aspect of GLC, then Reuniclus can power your deck up even further. Its Summoning Gate attack can super-charge your bench, putting any Pokémon into play. This includes Pokémon of any evolution stage, and even Pokémon without Psychic-type pre-evolved forms, like Espeon or Orbeetle. You can also bring out generically good Pokémon that your deck may already be playing, like Dragapult or Gallade. To maximize your odds of hitting, you can combine this with cards like Mallow or Ciphermaniac’s Codebreaking to guarantee certain Pokémon are found. Reuniclus is sure to be plenty of trainers’ new favorite Psychic-type strategy, especially if you enjoy big flashy plays or just gambling and seeing what your deck has in store this time!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Temporal Forces Set Review - Great Tusk</image:title>
<image:caption>If you play Standard, you might be excited for an upcoming Great Tusk mill deck, but there’s actually a different Great Tusk card that may be more impactful in Gym Leader Challenge. This Ancient Pokémon is worth your consideration for its Wrathful Charge attack, a simple but powerful attack. It slots perfectly into Fighting decks that use plenty of “Earthquake” attackers that damage your own Pokémon. Once you’ve satisfied this condition, you can hit 160 damage on a Basic Pokémon which is a great rate. And this attack cost synergizes well with Double Colorless Energy or Coalossal, letting you string attackers while keeping up the pressure.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Temporal Forces Set Review - Metang</image:title>
<image:caption>In Gym Leader Challenge, every card in your deck matters — including your middle evolutions. Metang might normally just be there to evolve into a Metagross, but now it might steal the show as the most important Beldum evolution. Metang has the powerful Metal Maker Ability, a sweet way to charge up Metal Energy to any of your Pokémon. While this ability relies on random chance to hit, it’s got a few sneaky upsides that you might not notice on first read. Metal Maker accelerates any number of Energy found, meaning that you can high roll or even stack your deck with cards with Supporter cards like Mallow or Ciphermaniac’s Codebreaking. And it places all the cards you didn’t attach straight onto the bottom of your deck. This is a sweet optimization that skilled players can take advantage of: seeing which cards are now on the bottom of your deck can inform what you might draw from the top of your deck with other effects. Small edges like this are the cherry on top for Metang. Once your board is sufficiently powered up, you can always “cash in” Metang and evolve it into one of any number of Metagross cards, which each in turn get better when they evolve from such a useful Stage 1 Pokémon. It may not do an insane amount of damage itself, but Metang checks all the boxes of a good support Pokémon, and will be a welcome edition in any Metal-type deck.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Temporal Forces Set Review - Koraidon</image:title>
<image:caption>One thing to note about Temporal Forces is that the Ancient and Future archetypes span across multiple types, which is less than ideal for making these sorts of decks work within Gym Leader Challenge. But some Pokémon may be strong enough to shine on their own. Koraidon’s first attack probably isn’t going to be too effective, capping out at 30 damage thanks to the lack of other single-prize Ancient Dragons. But Shred is a respectable attack, doing decent damage and smashing through pesky defensive effects for three energy. Notably, these energy are already commonly played in existing Dragon-type decks, so you might find it easy to add this Paradox Pokémon to your deck.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Temporal Forces Set Review - Miraidon</image:title>
<image:caption>If you’re interested in trying a more “new-age” Dragon deck, maybe you’ll want to check out Miraidon. Its Peak Acceleration attack accelerates two Basic Energy from your deck onto any of your Future Pokémon! …Which at this point, is limited to only Miraidon itself. Still, poking something for some decent damage (and maybe KOing a Basic Pokémon with a damage modifier like Muscle Band) can be a decent play to start the game, and the next turn you’ll have the powerful Sparking Strike attack at your disposal. What’s interesting about Miraidon is that it attacks for energy which isn’t commonly played in Dragon-type GLC decks. See if there are other Lightning or Psychic synergies that you might finally have an excuse to try!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Temporal Forces Set Review - Pidove</image:title>
<image:caption>Pidove is another example of how Gym Leader Challenge rewards you for considering every single card in your deck, even the evolving Basics. Pidove has the Emergency Evolution Ability, which is incredibly powerful. It can get a Stage 2 Pokémon right into play without having to search for Unfezant or use a Rare Candy, but it’ll require some setup. Luckily there are some great ways to damage your own Pokémon during your turn, namely Stadium cards like Team Magma’s Secret Base and Gapejaw Bog. If you play one of these Stadiums down, then bench Pidove, you can immediately turn it into an Unfezant as early as your first turn. There are nine different options for which Unfezant you might evolve Pidove into; see which one interests you the most!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Temporal Forces Set Review - Buddy-Buddy Poffin</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the most contentious cards in Gym Leader Challenge is Battle VIP Pass, a high-roll Item card that can set up your board on the first turn but otherwise clogs your hand up after that. This high-risk card can create some feel-bad experiences for some players, while others argue the consistency it provides is worth it. However, both kinds of trainer will probably agree that they’re fans of the new Buddy-Buddy Poffin. This item fills your bench nicely with evolving Basic Pokémon, but it can be played on any turn of the game, reducing the odds that you’ll end up stuck with it. Whether you love VIP Pass and want a second copy or hate it and want a less stressful alternative, Buddy-Buddy Poffin deserves your consideration for your Gym Leader Challenge deck.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paradox Rift Set Review - Toedscruel</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the biggest challenges in GLC is managing your resources in a deck with no duplicate copies of any card. To increase consistency and apply continuous pressure, many decks will recover cards from their discard pile in some way, often with Trainers like Klara or support Pokémon like Starmie. But what if these abilities just didn’t work? Toesdcruel is a great hate card for your opponent’s recursive strategies that might seek to reuse cards that go to the discard pile. Although Grass deck are often very fast and aggressive in GLC, maybe Toesdcruel has a place to stop your opponent from recovering from your beatdown!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paradox Rift Set Review - Chi-Yu</image:title>
<image:caption>Most trainers would agree that Fire is one of the weaker types in GLC, and most Fire trainers would agree that this is largely due to a lack of efficient Basic attackers in the type. Here, the card designers tease us with a new Basic Fire-type Pokémon which may be better than any existing options but probably won’t propel the type to new heights. Chi-Yu boasts decent stats with 110 HP and a Retreat Cost of 1, great for an early-game Pokémon that wants to set up some energy with its first attack then get out of there. If your opponent isn’t careful, they’ll be on the receiving end of Chi-Yu’s Megafire of Envy attack later in the game, which does a massive amount of damage for just 2 energy. While this cute, fishy fellow might not rescue Fire from its lackluster position in the metagame, it’ll certainly be a welcome addition to any Fire deck looking to improve its tempo in the early or late game.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paradox Rift Set Review - Veluza</image:title>
<image:caption>As mentioned above with Toedscruel, an important aspect of Gym Leader Challenge is managing your resources. Some decks do this by recovering those resources throughout the game, such as Hydro Pump decks that need to keep bringing their energy back to power up their attackers. While there are cards that can put energy back into your hand or your deck, why not just keep them on board? Veluza is a big Basic Pokémon that would be a great target for Water energy acceleration by the likes of Blastoise or Baxcalibur in the early game. When knocked out, Veluza saves you from having to find a few energy to power up your next attacker, smoothing out awkward turns and keeping your powerful deck churning.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paradox Rift Set Review - Elekid</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s not often that a Pokémon comes around with just 30 HP. The recent wave of “Baby Pokémon” have all shared this low HP and a free attack. These Pokémon can be knocked out by a stiff breeze, which can deter many players from using them. But if you’re brave enough, Elekid may reward you by sneaking some prizes out of nowhere. 30 damage for 0 energy is an amazing rate for an attack, great for setting up a KO or picking your opponent’s weakened Pokémon off the bench. And to top it off, Elekid has no Retreat Cost, meaning that it can run away to the bench next turn should it manage to survive. Sometimes GLC isn’t about being the biggest and strongest; it’s about being the smallest and fastest!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paradox Rift Set Review - Xatu</image:title>
<image:caption>Those who have played Standard format may recognize Xatu’s Clairvoyant Sense — it’s nearly the same as Shadow Rider Calyrex’s Underworld Door ability; the powerful combination of energy acceleration and draw power. Now Psychic trainers have access to this ability in GLC, and on a Pokémon that only gives up a single prize as well. Xatu is just one of several acceleration options that Psychic decks now have access to (see also: Malamar and Gardevoir), and one of several consistency Pokémon (see also: Gallade and Tinkaton). While some types are challenged with trying to make a deck work with too few support options, Psychic trainers will have difficulty choosing which of these many options are best for their deck!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paradox Rift Set Review - Espathra</image:title>
<image:caption>This set has not one but two freaky, Psychic birds that may see play in GLC. Espathra has the Stance Ability, which is functionally identical to Garchomp’s Sonic Slip Ability. This Ability can be a huge tempo swing, giving you a big hit into the opponent and demanding they knock out one of your benched Pokémon next turn if they want to return the favor. Espathra’s attack isn’t too bad either, taking KOs with ease if you’ve discarded Tulip. Plus, if your opponents seem set on devolving your Pokémon, Espathra is a great recursive threat to continue evolving and messing with your opponent’s tempo.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Continent Pokémon is known to lay the beatdown with big damage at a big cost, and this iteration of Groudon is no different. This card allows you to trade energy attached to your Pokémon for massive damage with Magma Purge, and is highly flexible in the number and source of that energy. Manually attaching this energy might be a slow strategy, so you’ll want to consider other ways of accelerating it, like Groudon’s first attack Swelling Power or accelerators like Coalossal, Lucario, or the new Garganacl from this set. Against your opponent’s biggest threats, Groudon may be your best option to execute an all-out attack and take them out!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paradox Rift Set Review - Garganacl</image:title>
<image:caption>As mentioned above, this set brings Fighting types another Pokémon to fill a role it desperately needs options for: energy acceleration. Garganacl can bring an energy back from the discard pile each turn, healing the target Pokémon a bit too. Much like the other Garganacl from Paldea Evolved, this healing can be a great way to hang in the battle if you fall behind while you set up this Stage 2 support Pokémon. Although it won’t be the easiest to get onto the board every game, you can imagine how powerful this acceleration would be when combined with Coalossal, or healing your huge Machamp out of KO range over and over</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paradox Rift Set Review - Brute Bonnet</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the more popular unique archetypes in Gym Leader Challenge is Darkness Poison, which seeks to wear the opponent down as their Pokémon’s health is drained with status conditions before their eyes. One of the biggest challenges this deck faces is finding consistent ways to poison the defending Pokémon throughout the whole game. Brute Bonnet might be the most reliable way to do this every turn. Its ability, when turned on with the new Ancient Booster Energy Capsule Tool, can be used every single turn on this Basic Pokémon. And as a small upside, the tool makes Brute Bonnet immune to status conditions itself. While you’ll still want enablers such as Hypnotoxic Laser in your deck, the Bonnet might be a great versatile option for keeping your opponent under control.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paradox Rift Set Review - Jirachi</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the more popular archetypes in GLC is Lost Zone Psychic, which employs many of the same strategies as Lost Zone decks in Standard to enable Sableye’s Lost Mine attack, an incredibly powerful attack with a condition that can be fulfilled quite quickly by a skilled pilot. There was no real way to stop Sableye from doing significant damage to your board other than limiting your opponent’s setup… until now! Jirachi’s Stellar Veil ability is a nice, simple option for Metal players to entirely sidestep the little gem goblin by preventing its counters from ending up on your bench. Pair Jirachi with Chaotic Swell to stop any stray Silent Labs from hitting the field and you’ll be able to mess your opponent up as they wonder where they went wrong.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paradox Rift Set Review - Tatsugiri</image:title>
<image:caption>Much like with the last set, Dragon players are scraping the absolute bottom of the barrel in Paradox Rift. Only one GLC-legal Dragon card was released and it’s a pretty mediocre support Pokémon. Survival Strategy isn’t the greatest setup attack as you’re left vulnerable to hand disruption supporters like N and Iono, but the double energy cost makes this card even less desirable as you’d have to waste a valuable double energy on the Mimicry Pokémon to use this attack with any efficiency. At least he’s cute.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paradox Rift Set Review - Luxurious Cape</image:title>
<image:caption>Let’s start with the craziest card we’ve seen in GLC in a long time: a way to make one of your single prize Pokémon into a multi-prizer. What??? That’s right, a Pokémon with Luxurious Cape attached gives up two prizes, but it has +100 HP as a benefit. Most of the time, this will result in the equipped Pokémon taking an extra hit to knock out, so at minimum you’re keeping up with the prize trade without having to find and charge energy to another attacker. But you can tailor your deck to make use of this card and push the advantage in your games. Maybe you’ll use it in a healing deck to tank hit after hit on a big Pokémon like Machamp? Or you can use the Cape with Penny and Regigias to soak hits with a VSTAR-sized wall. Just be careful of your opponent removing or deactivating this tool with Field Blower or Tool Jammer; it would feel really bad for your opponent to take two knockouts in just one turn! Allowing trainers the option to create a huge, multi-prize Pokémon is sure to add a new dimension to Gym Leader Challenge!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paradox Rift Set Review - Technical Machine: Blindside</image:title>
<image:caption>TM Blindside is the first of four Technical Machine cards released in Paradox Rift, and they all work in the same way. They’re Tool cards which give your Pokémon access to an attack with a Colorless cost, but only on the turn you attach the TM (as it will discard itself at the end of your turn). So unlike most Tool cards, they can’t be removed by your opponent’s Item cards, although be aware of effects that might nullify your tools as a static ability (like Tool Jammer)! Blindside is the only one of these new TMs that is used for direct offensive pressure — it provides a sniping option on an opposing Pokémon that’s already damaged. You can imagine this fits in well in decks that can spread damage counters through attacks or even abilities, as you’ll have targets ready to be Blindsided. But what’s really interesting about Blindside is how it synergizes with the specific Pokémon using the attack. Consider Articuno, who has the Delta Plus Ancient Trait. This is a powerful effect on Articuno that can’t be turned off by any means and gives you one more prize when it takes a knockout. Tri-Edge is a fairly weak attack, but what if you could give Articuno a strong attack? Especially in Water which has a good variety of spread and snipe available, you can sneak attack your opponent and come out way ahead with this synergy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paradox Rift Set Review - Technical Machine: Devolution</image:title>
<image:caption>This TM gives trainers access to a sneaky and disruptive attack that can really ruin someone’s day if used right. At first glance, Devolution doesn’t seem that powerful — your opponent can just re-evolve all their Pokémon next turn and you’ve done nothing, right? Without any special consideration, this is all that Devolution does, so you’ll need to set up certain scenarios to leverage it effectively. One way to use Devolution may be seen in Standard format: slowing down Rare Candy usage. If a Stage 2 Pokémon evolved with Rare Candy is devolved, the resulting Basic Pokémon can’t re-evolve without another Rare Candy, except you definitely won’t have another Rare Candy in a singleton format like GLC. So an opponent who gets greedy with their evolutions can be put back in their place with this TM. Maybe the sneakier but more effective way to leverage Devolution is taking advantage of that small window where a Pokémon goes back to a pre-evolved stage. For instance, what if you could lock all of your opponent’s Pokémon from evolving with Archeops? Or spread enough damage that the devolved Pokémon will be automatically Knocked Out with their lower HP? While the applications may not be obvious, the possibilities with Devolution are waiting to be explored!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paradox Rift Set Review - Technical Machine: Evolution</image:title>
<image:caption>If Devolution is the devil on your shoulder, then Evolution is the angel. This is a fast, powerful, versatile card that every GLC deck will need to at least consider running. One can imagine going second with this card, attaching an energy to their active Pokémon and starting to set their board up immediately. Not only does Evolution search Pokémon from your deck, but these Pokémon are evolving on the turn you use Evolution, meaning that Stage 1’s can evolve into Stage 2’s on the second turn of the game, which is bordering on ridiculous. For any deck that plays important and/or many evolutions (think Grass, Dragon, or Psychic for example), this TM is a must-consider for GLC trainers. Do note, however, that Evolution is not a freebie to use. Many decks like Lightning or Darkness would rather use their first attack to deal damage with speedy attackers like Zapdos or Hoopa. And the evolution clause requires you to have the evolving Pokémon on your bench (so it can’t be in your prizes or your deck), AND the evolution Pokémon has to be in your deck (meaning it can’t be in your prizes or your hand). So while this may increase the consistency and speed of many decks, time will tell how often this is a superior and worthwhile consistency option for any given deck.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paradox Rift Set Review - Technical Machine: Turbo Energize</image:title>
<image:caption>TM Energize is probably the weakest of the TM cards, but it’s far from unplayable. Notably, it provides decent energy acceleration to any deck, including types like Dragon or Fighting that might lack convenient acceleration. So while you wouldn’t want a copy of this card for every GLC deck, getting any two energy from your deck could be a great way to stabilize in the early game and start using powerful attacks right away.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paradox Rift Set Review - Defiance Vest</image:title>
<image:caption>In any other set, Defiance Vest would probably be the most powerful tool for GLC, but Paradox Rift had to outshine it five times. Nevertheless, this is a solid tanky card for decks that fall behind early and soak a lot of damage while developing a winning strategy. This card seems great combined with other cards that are best when behind on prizes, such as Counter Energy or Counter Catcher (reprinted in this set).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paradox Rift Set Review - Snorlax Doll</image:title>
<image:caption>This card has a really interesting and unique design, somewhere between Lillie’s Poké Doll and Battle VIP Pass. If you open this Item card, you can play it as your active Pokémon — a 120 HP zero-prizer is just an incredible rate. Unfortunately, this card is nothing but discard fodder once the game starts, so it’s probably not great in aggressive decks or decks with a lot of Basic Pokémon. But in decks with only a few Basics (think Dragon, Fossil Fighting) or control decks, this can be a great starter to try and Mulligan into.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paradox Rift Set Review - Mela</image:title>
<image:caption>Mela joins the Fire-type Supporter lineup alongside Welder and Blacksmith, giving Fire decks some great options to get energy into play. She also plays similarly to Raihan, only being playable after getting KO’d but providing energy acceleration and draw power. While she doesn’t necessarily do anything that Fire Supporters can’t already do, having one more option to get energy on your Pokémon and stay in the game is always welcome.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paradox Rift Set Review - Tulip</image:title>
<image:caption>Tulip isn’t a revolutionary Supporter; she’ll probably only be played in decks with Espathra. But she’s a plenty fine card on her own, recovering Pokémon and energy to the hand. This can be great after a knockout, or to compensate for removing Malamar from your deck, or discarding cards with Kirlia or Tinkaton’s abilities. Plus, look how good this art looks!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Obsidian Flames Set Review - Bellossom</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the most fun and silly Standard decks from the Sword & Shield era was based on Maractus, a card that loaded energy onto its attackers with Cherrim and prayed for some good coin flips. Bellossom’s Powerful Dance attack does much more damage per coin flip, and in Gym Leader Challenge it can pair with Venusaur to reach some truly explosive damage. These accelerators are already commonly played with cards like Zarude which do more damage for each energy attached… but what if your Pokémon could do even more damage? Use cards like Trick Coin or Glimwood Tangle to try again if you whiff, and make your games that much more exciting!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Obsidian Flames Set Review - Trevenant</image:title>
<image:caption>While some Grass decks might do everything they can to out-damage the opponent as quickly as possible, others can use tricky Abilities to control the opponent’s gameplan and slow them down. This Trevenant could be a great addition to these controlling strategies. Forest Miasma effectively Poisons the defending Pokémon, even those that switch in or are already Poisoned, making it a great option to whittle away at the opponent more quickly. And Lock Up can pick off evolving threats that you might want to bring up from your opponent’s bench, or keep a big threat pinned to the active while you attack your opponent’s resources in other ways. It may not do the most damage, but in the hands of a skilled trainer Trevenant may be the key piece to win you the game.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Obsidian Flames Set Review - Entei</image:title>
<image:caption>Fire-type trainers will know that the one of the biggest struggles their type has is a lack of strong basic attackers. Entei might be able to fill that role in the early game. Its Pressure Ability makes it much bulkier than its 130 HP would suggest, especially with a tool like Bravery Charm attached. And while you won’t be using Blaze Ball the first turn of the game, some support from a Double Colorless Energy will allow Entei to attack on the second turn going forward, applying some pressure while forming an obstacle your opponents will have to destroy to get to your other Pokémon. And in the late game, when you might have more support available like Charizard or Armarogue, Entei could be a great Pokémon to bring back from the discard pile to disrupt the opponent’s momentum even further.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Obsidian Flames Set Review - Camerupt</image:title>
<image:caption>Camerupt is one of those cards that makes a certain type of player’s eyes light up. The thought of dealing 250 damage with a bit of luck can make the risk of announcing Eruption worth it. While it may be fun to attack with Camerupt in the blind and pray, you can have your cake and eat it too by stacking the top of either player’s deck with Energy to guarantee an explosive KO. Cards like Switching Cups or Magcargo can put an Energy card on top of your own deck, and even the opponent’s deck can be controlled with Team Star Grunt. While it may let you down sometimes, Camerupt is sure to make the most explosive memories at your GLC table.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Obsidian Flames Set Review - Seismitoad</image:title>
<image:caption>Seismitoad might be one of the coolest cards to be released in Obsidian Flames. Its ability instantly inspires new deckbuilding ideas, making one wonder how to best leverage this Pokémon’s interesting and disruptive text. Quaking Area can be a huge, disruptive surprise for your opponent when you spring Seismitoad onto the board, and Echoed Voice is a very solid attack for a Pokémon that wants to sit in the Active Spot and deal huge damage while the opponent scrambles to catch up with you. While Seismitoad doesn’t have the explosive offensive potential as other Water-type options, the surprise disruption can leave an unprepared opponent totally stranded.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Obsidian Flames Set Review - Palafin</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the stars of Obsidian Flames prerelease, the Hero Pokémon boasts a very strong 2-energy attack in Justice Kick. However, the attack condition is not trivial — you’re going to have to devote some deck space to support it. Because Palafin has to switch in during the turn, and not between turns when a Pokémon is knocked out, you’re going to need some switching and retreating options to get Palafin where it needs to be. That being said, Jet Punch is a great holdover attack if you can’t get Palafin out and back into the Active Spot during the same turn, synergizing well with other spread/snipe Water Pokémon like Inteleon.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Obsidian Flames Set Review - Cleffa</image:title>
<image:caption>If you know about the early history of the Pokémon TCG, you’ll know that Neo Genesis Cleffa was one of the strongest Pokémon of all time, an impressive feat for a Pokémon with a mere 30 HP. This new Cleffa boasts a lot of similarities, such as a similar attack effect, free retreat, and an insanely cute artwork, but it notably lacks the Baby Rule that made it so dominant. Still, this Cleffa might be a fantastic option for early game-consistency in Psychic-type decks. If you’re afraid of an opposing Let Loose Marshadow (including your own!), Cleffa can be a great and very cute defense from an early-game brick.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Obsidian Flames Set Review - Claydol</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the coolest two-card combos in Gym Leader Challenge is (Fighting-type) Claydol and Protection Cube. Now, Psychic-type trainers can take advantage of their own version of this combination. It works in quite the same way — Claydol, while pondering its Cube, won’t deal any damage to itself, allowing it to Kaboom Doll over and over. While this Claydol can’t take any knockouts by itself, unlike its Fighting-type brother, its attack only costs one energy, which is very valuable for springing your opponent with this combo out of nowhere. And Psychic has plenty of mechanisms for cleaning up heavily damaged Pokémon on the opponent’s bench, like Blacephalon, allowing you to swing the game in a massive way when they’re least expecting it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Obsidian Flames Set Review - Stunfisk</image:title>
<image:caption>It seems that stalling strategies which seek to wear down the opponent’s Pokémon by trapping and stalling them are the big winners for Gym Leader Challenge from Obsidian Flames. This Stunfisk is a great, solo user of this strategy. Rumble is a great trapping attack, mostly because it only costs one energy. And with a tool attached, Stunfisk can deal some decent damage to attacking Pokémon too. Give it a Cape of Toughness or a Rocky Helmet for defense, a Muscle Band for offense, or a Fighting Fury Belt for both, and see how frustrated your opponents get with the Trap Pokémon.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Obsidian Flames Set Review - Paldean Clodsire</image:title>
<image:caption>This Paldean Clodsire is significantly better than the other printing in Obsidian Flames, although they are both very adorable. Venoshock is a great attack for more disruptive Darkness decks that seek to wear the opponent down with status conditions like Poison. Darkness decks can struggle to hit 200 damage, even with numerous damage buff options like Devoured Field and Dark Claw, so Venoshock can be a great option to knock out a huge Defending Pokemon when the rest of your attackers may not be able to. Plus, if you run Paldean Clodsire in your deck, that means you get to run Paldean Wooper as well :)</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Obsidian Flames Set Review - Kingambit</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s always worth stopping and reading a card when you see the words “Knocked Out.” Luckily, Kingambit does it to the opponent’s Pokémon! Furthermore, it’s a one-energy attack with a somewhat reasonable condition: put 4 or more damage counters on the defending Pokémon. You can do this with a regular attack, maybe a cheap one on a basic Pokémon, or maybe one of the many Metal type attacks that damage the active Pokémon and an opposing Benched Pokémon. Especially against tanky opponents, a Strike Down out of nowhere can leave even your opponent’s strongest Pokémon Knocked Out before they know it!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Obsidian Flames Set Review - Geeta</image:title>
<image:caption>Geeta’s text box contains some pretty scary text: “During this turn, your Pokémon can’t attack.” In such a fast format as Gym Leader Challenge, this may sound like an unplayable card. But the reason to play Geeta can make this hefty downside worth it in plenty of situations. In aggressive decks, it can be a fantastic way of ramping up an incredibly strong attack on your second or third turn, making an attempt at steamrolling your opponent. You could also play this in the late game to quickly charge up a huge threat you’ve recovered from the Discard Pile, like Wailord or Copperajah. While it’s not the kind of card you want to play every turn, Geeta’s strengths can really shine in the hands of an experienced trainer.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Obsidian Flames Set Review - Ortega</image:title>
<image:caption>Ortega is giving Thoughtsieze (or more accurately, Vendilion Clique) vibes with direct hand disruption rarely seen in the Pokémon TCG. Most hand disruption effects shuffle the opponent’s entire hand away and give them a new, hopefully weaker one; think Iono, Reset Stamp, Marshadow. But Ortega can snipe a key card from the opponent’s hand, like a Supporter or an Evolution, completely ruining your opponent’s next turn. Now think about how powerful this pointed disruption effect can be when combined with resetting your opponent’s hand. If you enjoy disruption, control, or just making your opponents mad, Ortega deserves a spot in your next GLC deck.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Obsidian Flames Set Review - Pokémon League Headquarters</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the scariest things in Gym Leader Challenge is a Basic Pokémon coming out of nowhere and destroying your Active Pokémon with a super efficient and powerful attack. Oftentimes there is little defense against a deck designed to attack with, and often recycle, Snorlax, Necrozma, or Drampa. But Pokémon League Headquarters might be a perfect way to do that. Taxing the opponent’s attacks can be a great way to slow them down for the rest of the game: make them accelerate an extra energy, use up a Stadium bump, or skip attacking that turn entirely. This attack tax can be combined with other disruptive effects like Seismitoad (featured previously). Pokémon League Headquarters may not be the flashiest card in Obsidian Flames, but it might just be the key piece of your next GLC strategy!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paldea Evolved Set Review - Jumpluff</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the most infamous Pokémon in GLC is Dragapult, with its ability to tilt any player off the other side of the table with its Infiltrator Ability and a few good coin flips. Now, Grass-type trainers get access to the same ability on their own Stage 2 Pokémon. And a similar spread attack to Dragapult’s Phantom Force can set up good knockouts on the opponent’s board as you sit behind your Ability and pray the coin flips your way. There’s even a Skiploom with a similar attack and Ability in this set, although you might want to consider the Skiploom from Lost Thunder or Evolving Skies that can cheat Jumpluff into play a turn early, synergizing nicely with its low attack cost.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paldea Evolved Set Review - Gyarados</image:title>
<image:caption>For being one of the most popular Water-type Pokémon represented in the Trading Card Game, Gyarados has had a hard time breaking into GLC. Many of its printings reflect the Pokémon’s wild and reckless nature, requiring a lot of energy to use attacks with high downsides. But this incarnation of Gyarados might hit the sweet spot between power and liability. Its first attack, Revengeful Storm, can hit 180 damage, which cleanly KO’s most things in GLC, if you’re behind on prizes. And Berserker Tackle reaches even higher at 200 damage; even after damaging itself, Gyarados will be sitting at a decent 130 HP. With energy acceleration options aplenty, Water trainers should consider this Gyarados to take care of their biggest knockouts.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paldea Evolved Set Review - Cetitan</image:title>
<image:caption>Just last set, we reviewed the first ever Cetitan card, with its massive HP and damage output for a Stage 1 Pokemon. This new Cetitan from Paldea Evolved is already looking to put the old one out of a job with similar boasts. 180 HP on a Stage 1 is always something worth noting, and Special Horn can reach an even higher damage output with no downside. It is worth noting that Water trainers may have to reconsider their strategy if they relied on accelerating only Basic energy with the likes of Rain Dance-style abilities, but pairing Cetitan with other powerful Special Energy users like Wailord might prove to power your whales toward a crushing victory!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paldea Evolved Set Review - Baxcalibur</image:title>
<image:caption>While Standard players are looking to leverage Baxcalibur to power up their multi-prize attackers, Gym Leader Challenge players shouldn’t let them have all the fun! Baxcalibur, with its Super Cold Ability, feels like a fresh coat of paint on Water’s current Rain Dancer Blastoise, boasting a better attack, half the retreat cost, and extra HP. While there aren’t nearly as many interesting Frigibax and Arctibax to select from compared to Squirtle and Wartortle, Water trainers will be making the choice between running Baxcalibur, Blastoise, or maybe both!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paldea Evolved Set Review - Raichu</image:title>
<image:caption>It seems that every set, the Lightning type continues to see more options for big haymakers alongside its fast and efficient signature attackers. The new Paldea Evolved Raichu has a nice, big “200” printed on its Thunderbolt attack, which is an amazing number for Gym Leader Challenge, blasting through the likes of Torterra, Wailord, and Snorlax with ease. And with the likes of Eelektrik and Flaaffy on your side, discarding all your energy doesn’t even seem like that much of a downside.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paldea Evolved Set Review - Shinx</image:title>
<image:caption>While most Pokémon that get featured in this set review are fully-evolved powerhouses that seek to take big KOs on the opponent’s Pokémon, this cute 40 HP Pokémon serves a different role. Its Big Roar Ability is a great utility option, especially in the early game when your opponent may be forced to send up a support Pokémon that doesn’t enjoy being in the active. Furthermore, this Shinx can evolve into the powerful Disconnect Luxio from Ultra Prism to further disrupt your opponent, and eventually into any number of great Luxray cards.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paldea Evolved Set Review - Luxray</image:title>
<image:caption>Would you look at that, another great Luxray card! One of the hardest choices Lightning GLC players will have to make is which of the incredible Luxray options to choose from if they want to run the Gleam Eyes Pokémon in their deck. This Luxray boasts some of the most interesting and powerful traits in all of GLC. Its Swelling Flash Ability means that, besides evolving your Pokémon into Luxray normally, you can also put it straight onto your bench if you’re behind on prizes, which is an incredible effect that can cause huge swings out of nowhere. And its attack will charge through all but the strongest attackers if you can power it up, making for some great comeback potential. If you plan on pickup up any copies of Luxray for your Standard decks, don’t forget to grab an additional copy for GLC!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paldea Evolved Set Review - Gothitelle</image:title>
<image:caption>Psychic is one of the most versatile types in Gym Leader Challenge, offering Pokémon with strong attacks, spread and damage counter placement, and even disruptive or controlling effects. Gothitelle is one of these tricky Psychic types that seeks to attack your opponent’s resources while dealing decent damage. Its Read the Stars Ability can really lock an opponent out of the game, forcing them to draw their worst cards each turn while you discard the resources still left in their hand. Combine this with other disruptive Trainer cards like Crushing Hammer, Delinquent, or Galar Mine and watch your opponent struggle helplessly as you Psych them Out!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paldea Evolved Set Review - Palossand</image:title>
<image:caption>Sometimes, all you need is a nice strong attacker that does a ton of damage for a cheap cost. Palossand offers a great way to do this for Psychic decks. Earthen Power can reach a respectable 160 damage for two energy if you have Dimension Valley in play, one of the best Stadium cards ever printed and a staple for Psychic GLC decks. Consider playing cards like Lusamine to recover the Valley and beat your opponents down with discounted attacks.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paldea Evolved Set Review - Tinkaton</image:title>
<image:caption>Besides boasting one of the best Pokémon designs of the new generation, Tinkaton also has a very powerful card to play in GLC. Its Gather Materials Ability is a fantastic way to smooth out your deck’s consistency by trading cards for more cards. And its Special Hammer attack smacks for great damage — even being usable for one Psychic energy while Dimension Valley is in play. Consider pairing Tinkaton with Kirlia and Gardevoir for a powerful draw engine, or Necrozma to utilize your special energy to the max.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paldea Evolved Set Review - Garganacl</image:title>
<image:caption>Sometimes the simplest Pokémon cards manage to be the strongest. Garganacl is a big, beefy Pokémon that’ll surely be played for its Blessed Salt Ability. Healing 20 damage after every turn (that’s your turn and your opponent’s turn) may not seem like a lot, but can snowball out of control and leave your entire team standing while you tear through your opponent’s Pokémon. There are plenty of applications for this Ability — think about pairing it with damage reduction effects like Rock Chestplate or Lake Acuity. Or maybe you’ll use it to heal off the damage caused by your Earthquake Pokémon like Whiscash and Donphan. If your opponent dares underestimate the power of Garganacl, they’ll soon find your Pokémon impossible to knock out and hitting as hard as ever.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paldea Evolved Set Review - Mabosstiff</image:title>
<image:caption>This Mabosstiff may not seem like the most intimidating card, boasting pretty average attack damage and no interesting abilities. But reading the text of its Comeuppance attack may have you thinking twice. It punishes attacking Pokémon who deal big damage — even if the opponent knocks out your Mabosstiff, they’ll be punished if their attacker can’t survive the hit as well. Use the Boss Pokémon to trade with your opponent’s strongest attackers and watch as they fall quickly behind in battle!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paldea Evolved Set Review - Orthworm</image:title>
<image:caption>As Tricky Gym puts it, “Orthworm from Paldea Evolved is GIGANTIC.” You may not think that 130 HP is that much for a Basic Pokémon in GLC, and you’d be right. But look closer and you’ll notice its Nutritional Iron Ability which boosts Orthworm to 230 HP if it has enough Metal energy on it. 230 HP is more than some Pokémon ex have, so this worm already looks like it’ll be pulling its weight. And adding on a tool like Bravery Charm to further increase its HP seems like a no-brainer. But where Orthworm gets really dangerous is when you can heal it with cards like Mallow & Lana, or reset its damage counters by picking it up with cards like Penny. There must be no better feeling in the world than watching your opponent attack your worm for two to three turns then wiping all their progress away with one card. Orthworm is sure to redefine just how tanky Metal decks can be.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paldea Evolved Set Review - Noibat</image:title>
<image:caption>Unfortunately, Noibat is probably not going to win you many games of GLC. It might not even make it into your Dragon-type deck. But why Noibat is really important is what it represents for Dragon-type gym leaders: the Scarlet and Violet block will continue to print Dragon-type cards. After not seeing any in Scarlet & Violet base set, Dragon tamers might be worried that the TCG would unofficially send Dragons into retirement for a few years like they did for most of the Sword & Shield block. But seeing this Noibat in only the second Scarlet & Violet set should be a bright ray of hope for Dragon trainers — any set could feature a powerful new inclusion for your Dragon-type GLC deck!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paldea Evolved Set Review - Pelipper</image:title>
<image:caption>Pelipper joins a long list of Stage 1 consistency Pokémon available to Colorless trainers. Instead of drawing cards like Bibarel, Pelipper gives you access to Supporters like Delcatty. The ability to choose between searching for a Supporter from your deck or recovering a Supporter from your discard pile is super useful. It can increase your consistency by finding your draw Supporters to keep churning through your deck, or assembling combos with cards like Guzma & Hala. Pelipper is also a great target for Scoop Up Net, allowing you to use Hearsay multiple times in a game for multiple purposes. While it isn’t the flashiest Colorless Pokémon, the plays it can enable in your deck may make it a key member of your team.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paldea Evolved Set Review - Slaking</image:title>
<image:caption>In the early days of GLC, Slaking was one of the best cards in Colorless decks, and maybe even the whole format; but with plenty of new releases, it has fallen by the wayside for many trainers. But Paldea Evolved Slaking is here to remind GLC players why this Pokémon should be respected and feared! Slacker’s Headstrike, as far as attacks go, is simply busted. 240 damage for three energy is an insanely good rate that will crush most Pokémon that dare face Slaking down. The rest of the text on this card attempts to nerf this powerful Stage 2 Pokémon, leaving Slaking sleeping and useless by your next turn more often than not. But Colorless is well-equipped to work around Slaking’s weaknesses and keep swinging turn after turn. Use the new Therapeutic Energy to keep Slaking from sleeping on the job, or the new Jet Energy to reset Slaking’s status when it goes to the bench. If you can get this Stage 2 Pokémon churning, your opponent will find themself wondering what hit them!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paldea Evolved Set Review - Giacomo</image:title>
<image:caption>Giacomo is one of those Supporters that doesn’t say “draw […] cards” on it, which will give many trainers pause when considering it for their decks. But this is true of many of the best supporters, like Boss’s Orders and Hex Maniac. Cards that can greatly affect the board may not help with early-game consistency, but their well-timed use can turn a losing position into a winning one immediately. Giacomo is particularly interesting as it hates on Special Energy, a key component of many of the best decks in format. If you find yourself facing many opponents who use Porygon-Z and Archeops to accelerate energy into play, consider Giacomo (maybe even alongside Faba?) to punish your opponent for trying to set up on you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paldea Evolved Set Review - Iono</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the interesting aspects of GLC is trying to balance new cards with similar effects to old ones. Should you replace the old card with a new one that has a slightly different effect? Should you try and run both for extra consistency? Iono enters the TCG as a midpoint between N and Marnie, two of the most popular supporters ever played. This card is a consistency Supporter, hand disruptor, and comeback card all in one package. Use it early game to continue setting your board up, when behind on prizes to recover some momentum, or in the late game to try and stick your opponent out of taking their last prize. Whether you decide to replace N, Marnie, or neither, every GLC deck should take a good look at how Iono might benefit their strategy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paldea Evolved Set Review - Therapeutic Energy and Jet Energy</image:title>
<image:caption>As both of these new Colorless Special Energy were already mentioned in reference to Slaking, we’ll discuss them together down here. These are two great Colorless energy with nice effects that won’t break the game on their own but can be leveraged by smart trainers to enable powerful plays. Therapeutic Energy can stop rogue Status Condition strategies from slowing you down in addition to keeping your Pokémon that self-inflict status conditions from tripping over themselves. And Jet Energy is a great pivot option; attach it to a benched Pokémon once you’ve fully charged it up for a big attack, or attach it to a Pokémon with 1 retreat cost then retreat it to put whatever Pokémon you want in the Active Spot. These cards also pair very well with Colorless Special Energy accelerators like Porygon-Z and Archeops (although you should be careful to note that “attach-from-hand” effects like Jet Energy’s don’t trigger when using an ability to put them on a Pokémon!)</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paldea Evolved Set Review - Reversal Energy</image:title>
<image:caption>This is yet another card that promises to make a big splash in both Standard and GLC. A triple rainbow energy is something that the TCG rarely sees; Reversal Energy is the first one to actually be legal for GLC. While this energy does present two hoops to jump through before its full potential is unlocked, the payoff may be too great to ignore. Decks that often start behind on prizes and play Evolution Pokémon with expensive attacks will love launching a powerful attack out of nowhere with just one attachment. This card feels like an even stronger version of Counter Energy, a card that already has amazing comeback potential. Dragon comes to mind as a deck that loves having multiple multi-colored energy on a Pokémon; with Double Dragon Energy, Counter Energy, and now Reversal Energy, opponents should be very wary of underestimating Dragon type decks!</image:caption>

<image:caption>If any type in Gym Leader Challenge can utilize multiple Stage 2 Pokémon, it’s the Grass type. Arboliva is a utility Stage 2 Pokémon, with the incredibly powerful Fill Oil ability that can heal a Pokemon to full health. Grass has the perfect target for this ability in Torterra BRS, with its massive 190 HP. And with existing Scoop Up Net synergy with Roserade DRX, trainers may try using Arboliva’s ability multiple times, creating an unstoppable juggernaut that will tear through the opponent’s Pokémon over and over. Although it’s not the most threatening Pokémon to see across the table, don’t underestimate Arboliva and its healing powers!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Scarlet & Violet Set Review - Scovillain</image:title>
<image:caption>On the opposite end of the Grass-type spectrum from Arboliva is Scovillain, an all-out attacker. This Stage 1 Pokémon can do 180 damage if you can satisfy its Super Hot Yee-Haw attack cost. Venusaur SLG can turn one Grass energy to two, and you can attach a Basic Fire Energy or some sort of Rainbow Energy to boost the damage to its max. While it won’t be surviving many attacks, Scovillain can convert just a few energy into a massively powerful attack that will KO nearly any Pokémon that dares stand in its way.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Scarlet & Violet Set Review - Armarouge</image:title>
<image:caption>One thing Fire-type Pokémon are known for is burning through all of their energy with powerful attacks. So as a Fire trainer, one of your biggest challenges is to figure out how to keep your Pokémon’s energy supply healthy. Armarouge is an interesting new way to do that by swarming energy from your bench to your Active Pokémon. This Stage 1 Pokémon synergizes well with Magma Basin and other Pokémon which can generate energy themselves (such as Team Magma’s Camerupt DCR), but also with tool cards like Wishful Baton or Exp. Share that can keep energy in play as your attackers are knocked out. It’ll be exciting to see what new strategies may be unlocked by Armarouge in Gym Leader Challenge!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Scarlet & Violet Set Review - Cetitan</image:title>
<image:caption>If you’ve ever played against a Water-type Gym Leader Challenge deck, you’ve probably had a difficult time trying to knock out your opponent’s bulky whale Pokémon. Whether that’s been Kyogre from Crown Zenith, or one of two different Wailord cards, Water has no shortage of strong attackers with massive HP stats. The new Cetitan is a welcome addition to this cetacean family. Besides having a gargantuan HP stat for a Stage 1 Pokemon, Cetitan also has an incredibly powerful attack that does up to 200 damage for a manageable cost. Similar to its whale brethren before it, healing this Pokémon or giving it a defense buff will help it go the distance against even the most powerful attackers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Scarlet & Violet Set Review - Pawmot</image:title>
<image:caption>Lightning-type Gym Leader Challenge decks are typically focused on cheap attacks and outpacing the opponent, meaning they might struggle with high damage output when the opponent puts a massive Pokémon in the Active Spot. Pawmot from Scarlet & Violet might be the solution to this struggle. 230 damage knocks out nearly everything in the format, and the self-accelerating ability helps you keep the tempo up. With some switching cards and Dynamotor Pokémon, you may even be able to recycle this massively powerful attack to decimate your opponents when they least expect it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Scarlet & Violet Set Review - Annihilape</image:title>
<image:caption>Playing Stage 2 Pokémon in any format is a big challenge, especially in a singleton format like Gym Leader Challenge. So if you’re putting one in your list, you want it to be worth it. The first ever Annihilape card makes a strong case for this. Its second attack only costs 2 energy and does enough damage to knock out the vast majority of Pokémon. But its Rage Fist attack is where Annihilape really shines. The damage this attack can do quickly spirals out of control — at its strongest, Rage Fist can knock out a Machamp LOR, a nearly impossible task without hitting for weakness. If you like seeing huge numbers in Gym Leader Challenge, Annihilape is the Pokémon for you!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Scarlet & Violet Set Review - Lucario</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the greatest strengths of the Fighting type is its ability to do a lot of damage with very little energy. Lucario is a great example of this strategy in action. Avenging Knuckle can do 150 damage for 1 energy, which is just nuts! Using this Pokémon can be a great tempo play as you recover your board from a knockout. And after Lucario takes a big swing, you can decide to keep up the pressure with its Accelerating Stab attack, or switch it to the bench and send up another attacker, leaving the Aura Pokémon to come back for revenge once more!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Scarlet & Violet Set Review - Kingambit</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the most infamous Pokémon in Gym Leader Challenge is Guzzlord CEC, who can take double prizes with Red Banquet. One of the biggest challenges to this strategy is taking knockouts with an attack that only does 120 damage. As the HP of single prize Pokémon continues to increase, Guzzlord will need to continue boosting its damage to keep up. While you can use cards like Muscle Band or Reverse Valley to do more damage, an ability that adds 30 damage per attack would be incredible for Guzzlord. That’s where Kingambit comes in. It can sit on your bench and make the attacks of Guzzlord (and other attackers like Hoopa DAA) stronger, demanding to be dealt with or sending your Basic attackers to victory.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Scarlet & Violet Set Review - Revavroom</image:title>
<image:caption>Ever since Gym Leader Challenge started, Metal trainers have been asking for more consistency options. A Pokémon that could draw cards would be great. Currently, there are a few Jirachi that try to fill this role, but they require a lot of pivoting and deck space to work. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just put a Bibarel in your deck? Now, you can! (Well, almost). Revavroom is a great option for drawing cards in Metal decks, and has a few more synergies you might not notice at first. Besides filling your hand over and over, the requirement of discarding an energy can actually be turned into an upside with smart deck construction. There are so many things you can do with Metal in your discard pile, like retrieving it with Mount Coronet or accelerating it with Bronzong! Now that the Metal type has something it’s been wanting for a long time, go out there and see what you can build with it!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Most of the Pokémon on this list offer strong and efficient attacks, rewarding aggressive play and streamlined deckbuilding. Skwovet, however, offers something else for Gym Leader Challenge players. It can help you conserve resources by putting them back into your deck (say, Special Energy) while also refreshing your hand, allowing you to see a ton of cards off the back of Bibarel BRS. This combo is seen in Standard format and is a great way to add consistency to your deck. If you’re a thoughtful player who cares about conserving their resources, try playing this Cheeky Pokémon in your deck!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Old heads will remember Max Elixir, a high-rolling item card that could accelerate tons of energy out of nowhere. Electricity Generator takes the high-roll and dials it up to eleven. While it views one fewer card than Max Elixir, it can accelerate twice that amount of energy to your board, enabling explosive turns for your deck. If you’re a real Lightning gamer, you can even run cards like Rotom Phone or Switching Cups to guarantee energy hits off the pencil sharpener or whatever this thing is.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Scarlet & Violet Set Review - Defiance Band</image:title>
<image:caption>While it hasn’t seen much success in Standard, Defiance Band might be an amazing staple for GLC going forward. Many decks rely on starting from behind, such as those that use Mismagius or Magneton for support by going down a prize. Others are simply slower to get started, like Dragon. So a tool card that leverages this supposed disadvantage to hit key numbers could be a great inclusion in many lists going forward.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Scarlet & Violet Set Review - Arven</image:title>
<image:caption>The Pokémon TCG made a rules change for the first time in years by decoupling Item cards and Tool cards. While this won’t shake up every game you play, it will affect some of the trainer cards you choose to play. For instance, Irida can no longer grab your Muscle Bands or Pot Helmets. If you find yourself playing a Tool-reliant strategy, you’ll want more ways to search them out. Arven is a great Supporter to try out because he can find these difficult-to-search Tools, as well as an item like a ball search card to boot. If you like early-game consistency or late-game combos, try out Arven today!</image:caption>

<image:caption>While Grass is one of the strongest types in GLC, it has always struggled with draw power on-board. The best draw support Pokémon that Grass currently has access to is Sawsbuck which draws exactly one (1) card per turn. With Lost Origin, we’ll be seeing Beautifly and its Elated Draw ability provide some needed support to Grass-type trainers. While it is a Stage 2 Pokemon, Grass is known for its ability to easily find Pokemon thanks to cards like Grotle, Grovyle, and Turffield Stadium which can search the deck every turn. If you’re a Grass player and hate to see a late-game N or Roxanne from your opponent, consider Beautifly to draw you out of these tough spots!</image:caption>

<image:caption>As is expected with Fire-type Pokémon, Rapidash from Silver Tempest utilizes Fire Energy to propel your Pokémon into a fiery blaze! Heat Boost shares its effect with the old Volcanion EX’s Steam Up ability, but now printed on a GLC-legal Pokémon. This will allow your Pokémon to go the extra mile and deal huge damage, especially alongside cards that increase damage like Muscle Band. Especially with ways to recover Fire energy from the discard like Fire Crystal and Blacksmith, Rapidash will be ensuring your Fire-type attackers can hit important KOs on big Pokémon. And most importantly, it also has a stamped promo version, providing a great option for players to bling out their Fire-type decks!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Silver Tempest & GLC - Incineroar</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the coolest parts about GLC is that every Pokémon you select for your deck matters, even your pre-evolved forms! This Incineroar really shines a spotlight on your choice of Litten and Torracat, as its Secret Attack lets it use an attack from one of the pre-evolved Pokémon under it. We can see a natural combo with the Litten and Torracat released alongside Incineroar in Silver Tempest: you can copy Torracat’s Gritty Claws attack to keep Incineroar at a low HP if it’s attacked next turn, then hit for massive damage on the crackback with a 320-damage Reprisal! Or, skip the combo altogether and hit for 180 for a single energy with the help of Charizard PGO. With this much versatility, Incineroar certainly makes the case for itself in Fire-type Gym Leader Challenge decks!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Silver Tempest & GLC - Wailord</image:title>
<image:caption>Trainers who’ve played even a few games of Gym Leader Challenge have probably faced Wailord VIV before: a massive behemoth with 200 HP that can do 170 damage for 4 (acceleratable) energy. But what if this Wailord got bulkier and stronger? Wailord from Silver Tempest is the “I’m you but better” of Float Whale Pokémon cards. Its Jumbo-Sized ability makes it very difficult to KO, and can compound with defensive cards like Pot Helmet or Mallow & Lana to keep shrugging off attacks for many turns at a time. And its Special Waves attack, which does enough damage to knock out the stinky old Wailord VIV, is used easily with cards like Blastoise BCR’s energy acceleration. Even moreso than before, if you see a Wailord hit your opponent’s side of the field in Gym Leader Challenge, you better knock it out immediately before it becomes a problem that you can’t overcome!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Silver Tempest & GLC - Hypno</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the most unfortunate quirks of GLC is the difficulty some Pokémon have getting into play. If an evolution Pokémon doesn’t share a type with a printing of all of its pre-evolved forms, you’ll have to use cards like Dream Ball or Archie’s Ace in the Hole to “cheat” these Pokémon into play. But in some cases, you can use Pokémon attacks and abilities to get these misfit Pokémon into play! Silver Tempest’s Hypno can bring Stage 1 Psychic Pokémon out from your deck, getting them into play stress-free. Now your Espeon, Sylveon, Alolan Marowak, Wyrdeer, and Dottler can come out to play! GLC players are sure to explore new strategies with the use of these cards: for instance, evolving Dottler into Orbeetle BST to cheat out even more Pokémon from the deck. Oftentimes in Gym Leader Challenge, the coolest Pokémon to include in your deck are ones that you’ll never do damage with, like Hypno!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Silver Tempest & GLC - Mismagius</image:title>
<image:caption>Something that’s great about Gym Leader Challenge is how many different ways there are to reach your deck’s win condition. Because Pokémon have lower HP relative to multi-prize Pokémon found in other formats, spread archetypes can pick up KOs fast enough to compete with more traditional aggro decks. Psychic is one of the best types at manipulating damage in this way, with cards like Blacephalon CEC, Dragapult RCL, and the new Mismagius. For one energy, the Eerie Voice attack can prime your opponent’s Pokémon to be knocked out by other spread attackers later in the game. And Mismagius’s Spiteful Magic ability is powerful as well, damaging an attacker for you to clean up later. Without big numbers printed on it, Mismagius may invite your opponents to underestimate you… to their eventual doom!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Silver Tempest & GLC - Kirlia</image:title>
<image:caption>There are few things in the Pokémon TCG more powerful than drawing cards. Support Pokémon which can do this with the use of abilities are incredibly valuable to making decks functional and consistent. With Silver Tempest Kirlia, Psychic players will be able to make their decks speedier than ever thanks to its Refinement ability providing card advantage every turn. What’s really cool about this Kirlia is that it can evolve further – trainers have plenty of Gardevoir and Gallade to choose from (some brave Trainers may even choose to include one of each in their Psychic decks)! Some obvious choices include Gardevoir CRE to draw cards and do big damage or Gallade ASR to find Supporters and keep your energy around. While Kirlia has appeared in many Psychic GLC decks before, it now takes on its own supporting role to propel trainers to victory!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Silver Tempest & GLC - Meowstic</image:title>
<image:caption>It seems that the Pokémon card designers have listened to the cries of Psychic trainers that are tired of playing Musharna NXD as a support Pokémon, because Silver Tempest contains not just one but two amazing Stage 1 Psychic support Pokémon. This Mewostic’s ability functions similar to Gallade’s Buddy Catch, but being printed on a Stage 1 Pokémon can give decks a huge burst of consistency in the early game. What can your deck do with a guaranteed Professor’s Research on Turn 2? Or maybe you’ll stash an Avery in your hand to undo your opponent’s setup? Maybe a Hex Maniac to slow them down while you gain the lead? Although it’s a one-time effect, don’t underestimate how impactful this Meowstic can be in GLC!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Silver Tempest & GLC - Palossand</image:title>
<image:caption>As discussed earlier with Mismagius, spread is a really interesting archetype that’s much more viable in Gym Leader Challenge thanks to the relatively lower HP of the Pokémon in the format. Fighting-type trainers may look to build into this strategy with cards like Palossand. For just a single energy, this sandy fella brings all of your opponent’s Pokémon 30 damage closer to being knocked out. And with 140 HP, it’s not unlikely Palossand will be able to attack two or three times itself. With that much damage spread across the board, your opponents will need to be extra cautious of how low their Pokémon’s HP are as you prepare to clean up the stragglers with your other Fighting-type Pokémon!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Silver Tempest & GLC - Crobat</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the greatest strengths of Darkness decks in GLC is the ability to take multiple prizes at once with the king Guzzlord CEC. Now, with Silver Tempest’s Crobat and its Critical Bite attack, can Darkness gym leaders lean even further into this strategy? While 30 damage is not much at all in terms of taking a knockout, the ability to target any Pokémon with this damage is really important. Skilled trainers may combo Crobat with cards that boost damage, like Dark Claw or Reverse Valley, or cards which can set up KOs anywhere on the board, like Galarian Zigzagoon SSH and Galarian Obstagoon SSH. In an especially evil combo, you can bring a weak Basic Pokémon back with Echoing Horn and knock it out again, taking all six prizes off of the same weak Pokémon! Show your opponents how devious you can be with Crobat!</image:caption>

<image:caption>If you had to characterize the Metal type in Gym Leader Challenge, it would be “slow and tanky.” The type is better at surviving opposing attacks than powering up with lots of energy to deal big damage out of nowhere. But the new Klingklang from Silver Tempest may be a way for Metal trainers to reach for this speed they’ve only dreamed about. Accelerating energy from the deck is a massively powerful effect in the Pokémon TCG; see Rillaboom SSH’s popularity. While only accelerating on evolution is not as good as accelerating every turn, Metal trainers may discover that three energy (or six if you utilize a Scoop Up Net!) is enough for their deck to shift into a higher gear and speed past their opponents!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Silver Tempest & GLC - Dragonite</image:title>
<image:caption>Other than Fairy, Dragon is the type with the fewest GLC-legal Pokémon cards, so any new additions are particularly worthy of attention and experimentation. This Dragonite makes its case by offering what Dragon-type Pokémon so often need – energy acceleration. Nearly every Dragon-type Pokémon’s best attacks require multiple different types of energy to be attached, so attaching just the right energy directly from the deck, even once, might be all a Dragon deck needs to run away with the game. And 180 damage is nothing to sneeze at either. Notably, this Dragonite will have to contend with the previously ubiquitous Fast Call Dragonite TEU. Will you stay with the supportive Dragonite to keep your deck running every turn? Or fire up your strongest Dragons with a huge surge of energy?</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Silver Tempest & GLC - Archeops</image:title>
<image:caption>Trainers who follow the Standard format are surely aware of Archeops and its synergy with Lugia VSTAR which can cheat it into play and power up your multiprize Pokémon’s attacks. But don’t let the lack of Assemble Star in Gym Leader Challenge deter you from trying out the First Bird Pokémon in GLC! As we’ve discussed with Klinklang and Dragonite, attaching energy to Pokémon directly from the deck is an immensely powerful effect, making many Stage 2 Pokémon worth playing despite the risks involved. Archeops is probably the most powerful of them all, accelerating multiple Special Energy from the deck at once; Porygon-Z UNB users already know that Colorless has no shortage of incredible Special Energy like Triple Acceleration Energy and Powerful Colorless Energy to utilize. The downside to this Archeops is that its first evolution is Unidentified Fossil: an Item card which is much less searchable than a Basic Pokémon. It’ll be really exciting to see how the metagame adapts to the introduction of Archeops: will it replace Porygon-Z, or maybe be played in the same Colorless decks? Will Colorless trainers try playing Pokémon Research Lab to get Archen out of the deck, a technique previously only known to Fighting-type Gym Leaders? Don’t underestimate this wacky bird Pokémon!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Silver Tempest & GLC - Lance</image:title>
<image:caption>As far as trainer cards go, Silver Tempest is definitely on the lighter side, mostly providing support to other formats like Standard. But there is one card that is sure to be popular among trainers, and that’s the original Dragon master himself: Lance. His effect is simple but strong, pulling multiple Dragon-type Pokémon out of the deck at once. This is an especially handy effect for a type like Dragon, which has a variety of attackers that may all be useful in different situations. This is also a great budget option for trainers who are having trouble getting their hands on Gabite DRX – Lance searches out about as many Dragons as you might expect Gabite to in a game, all at once! And with Dragonite TEU’s Fast Call ability, you’ll be able to utilize Lance at any point in the game.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - GLC Update 1.3 - Kyogre decks rely on Milotic’s Energy Grace Ability, which allows you to KO Milotic in order to attach up to three Basic Energy from the discard pile to one of your Pokémon in play. In this way, Kyogre’s Amazing Surge attack, which is typically difficult to power up, becomes easily accessible. This combination is able to be performed consistently and repeatedly because of the ample support Water has available to it, most notably with Drizzile and Inteleon‘s Shady Dealings Abilities, which allow Water Trainers to search their deck for the exact Trainer cards they need to set up. This combo has become even more consistent in recent months with the addition of Hisuian Basculin, Hisuian Heavy Ball and Irida to the card pool.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - GLC Update 1.3 - The Amazing Kyogre deck is usually able to win by announcing just two Amazing Surge attacks since only a few Pokémon in GLC have over 160 HP, and all of those that do evolve from Pokémon with less. If the opponent isn’t able to KO Kyogre after the first Amazing Surge, checkmate is usually achieved. But even if Kyogre is KO’d, recycling and reusing Amazing Surge is quite easy. With Splash Energy, Kyogre gets returned to the hand when it is KO’d instead of the discard pile. With Octillery in play, Water trainers have plenty of draw power to find the necessary cards to rebuild Kyogre. Even if Kyogre does have to take a turn to rebuild, Water Trainers can always hide behind Articuno to make sure that their valuable Milotic and Kyogre do not get brought into the Active Spot with Guzma or Boss’s Orders. If the Kyogre player falls behind, Counter Energy is an easy out to a quick Amazing Surge as well.</image:title>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog - GLC Update 1.3 - Some players may ask, why is Amazing Kyogre getting banned when Milotic is clearly the enabler? Good Question! Water has a lot of ways to power up Kyogre and more than one evolution line that enables its problematic attack. If Milotic gets banned and Kyogre stays, players will just move to the next way of powering up Kyogre consistently (Pokémon GO Blastoise, Counter Energy, etc). The point I came to repeatedly was this: “Does an attack that deals 80 damage to everything belong in a single prize format without universal Bench Barrier?” And that answer, I believe, is definitely not. Milotic’s Energy Grace Ability is strong, but comes at a steep cost and could be feasibly used in other creative ways. Kyogre’s Amazing Surge attack is simply oppressive in a format that revolves around single Prize Pokémon. There may come a day when Milotic’s Energy Grace Ability does not fit with the format any longer, but at this time I do not believe that the card is an issue without Kyogre to take advantage of.</image:title>
